The aroma of freshly baked croissants wafting through your kitchen will transport you to a quaint French patisserie on a cozy morning in Paris. This recipe is a labor of love, but the results are worth every minute.

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/4 cups unsalted butter, cold
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup cold milk
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

  1. In a small bowl, combine the cold water and milk. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture and let it sit for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in 1/4 cup of the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, then shape it into a square. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out the chilled dough into a 1/4-inch thick rectangle. Dot the surface with 1/4 cup of cold butter, then fold the dough into thirds, like a letter. Chill for 20 minutes.
  5. Repeat the rolling and folding process two more times, chilling the dough in between each fold.
  6. After the final fold, wrap the dough and chill for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  7. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Roll out the dough into a large rectangle and cut it into triangles.
  8. Roll each triangle into a croissant shape, starting with the wide end. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Brush the croissants with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the croissants are puffed and golden brown.
  11. Enjoy your homemade Classic French Croissants: Buttery Perfection with a steaming cup of coffee or a glass of fresh orange juice.
