Tiramisu, the Italian dessert that translates to “pick me up,” is a luscious and indulgent treat that never fails to delight. This homemade authentic tiramisu recipe captures the essence of Italy in every bite, with layers of delicate ladyfingers soaked in espresso and layered with a rich mascarpone mixture.

Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup brewed espresso, cooled
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 1 package ladyfingers (about 24)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting
  • Chocolate shavings, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a heatproof bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler) and whisk constantly until the mixture thickens and becomes pale. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  2. Add the mascarpone cheese to the egg yolk mixture and mix until smooth.
  3. In a separate bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Gently fold the whipped cream into the mascarpone mixture.
  4. In a shallow dish, combine the brewed espresso and coffee liqueur. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the mixture and arrange a layer of dipped ladyfingers in the bottom of a serving dish.
  5. Spoon half of the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers and smooth it out.
  6. Add another layer of dipped ladyfingers and top with the remaining mascarpone mixture.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  8. Before serving, dust the tiramisu with unsweetened cocoa powder and garnish with chocolate shavings.
